Update on Webb Dock Extension Project

The Webb Dock East Extension Project has kicked off since the contract announcement in March 2022.

Demolition works for a redundant piece of concrete pier, colloquially known as ‘the knuckle’, have started with service relocations and site establishment works successfully completed.

In recent weeks, saw-cutting and coring of the old structure has taken place, and sections of concrete slabs have been removed. 

“Our works will enable larger ships to call at the terminal, helping to make the Port of Melbourne more productive and efficient,” said Walter Cambruzzi, Senior Project Manager.

The project team is looking ahead to the arrival on site of a spudded pontoon with crane to assist in the demolition and piling works, and the arrival of the piles required for the 71 metre extension of the quay line.

Extension of Webb Dock East

The Port of Melbourne is reporting that construction work is getting underway at Webb Dock East to reduce port congestion, improve efficiency and accommodate larger ships.

The project involves demolishing a redundant section of concrete and extending the quay line by 71 metres, restoring Webb Dock East’s intended design capacity to a two-berth terminal.

Port of Melbourne Boat Tours for Summer

The Port of Melbourne is again offering boat tours of the port this summer.  They are now charging a fee but, at $5.50 + $1.20 booking fee, it's hardly expensive.  Bookings must be done online and open 2-3 weeks before each tour.

Tours will be on 26 November, 25 February, and 29 April.

The February tour will depart from Williamstown and include a visit to the new container terminal and automotive trade facilities at Webb Dock as well as the crude oil terminal at Point Gellibrand so will be different to the tour that most residents would have been on before.

The November and April tours seem to be similar to previous tours, departing from Docklands and visiting Victoria Dock, Appleton Dock, and Swanson Dock.

More Shade for Maritime Cove

A permanent new shade structure is currently under construction in the playground at Maritime Cove, which will help keep little visitors and their parents out of the sun while they play. A part of the playground has been temporarily fenced off while the shade structure is installed, so please note there will be changed access and observe all safety signage in the area.

The new, shadier playground area is expected to reopen by mid-June 2017.

Webb Dock Survey

The operator of Victoria International Container Terminal (the new container part of Webb Dock) would dearly love input from BCNA members on their views of the community engagement in the design and construction of the facility.

Maritime Cove Park and Playground

The Port of Melbourne have provided the following information which may be of interest:

Construction of the new park and playground facility on the foreshore at Perce White Reserve is well underway. The first of the park’s play equipment has been installed including re-purposed maritime assets comprising buoys, a crows nest and channel markers. Work has also started on new climbing 
attractions and the installation of replica shipping containers. Alternative access to boardwalks and Webb Trail may be in place from time-to-time to enable works. 

New Bike Path for Webb Dock Precinct

A new ‘linear’ park on port land running parallel to Todd Road has been created, linking the bay foreshore through to Westgate Park. This shared landscaped pathway features drinking fountains, seating and earth mounds set amongst native plants.

A final section is due for completion in November creating a continuous pathway running from the Yarra River near the West Gate Bridge, through Westgate Park along Todd Road, joining with Perc White Reserve and the Webb Dock trail to the new observation platform at Webb Point.

The formal part of the meeting will include presentation of reports and the annual financial statement together with the election of office bearers for 2016-17.

Our Guest speaker will be the Mayor of the City of Port Phillip, Councillor Bernadene Voss.

Also speaking will be Claire Jordan-Whillans, Media & Community Relations Manager for Victoria International Container Terminal Limited (VICT) who will provide a brief report on the new container terminal at Webb Dock.

Our local state member The Hon. Martin Foley, MP will also be attending.

Financial members will be sent the Agenda and papers for the meeting towards the end of October.

Community Invesment Grants

Victoria International Container Terminals (VICT), the operators of Webb Dock, have a Community Investment Fund grants programme.  This year, fourteen organisations working with young people in Port Phillip and in Hobsons Bay will each receive a grant of up to $20,000.

Reminder - Todd Road Closed this weekend

Don't forget that Todd Road will be closed this weekend (7pm Friday to 5am Monday) between the Life Saving Club and the freeway. The works will involve cutting out existing pavement and replacement with new asphalt.

Todd Road Closure - 17-20 June

As part of the Webb Dock works programme, the final temporary closure of Todd Road between West Gate Freeway west bound freeway entry ramp and north of the Life Saving driveway is scheduled from 7pm Friday 17th June to 5am Monday 20th June, detours will be in place as shown (below). This temporary closure will enable final road resurfacing works.

Road Changes - Cook Street and Entry/Exit to the West Gate Bridge

Further to the recent post about the widening of Cook Street and changes to the entry and exit to the West Gate Bridge we have received some more information from the contractors.

The changes will affect the areas shown below (can be downloaded here):

The work will take place from now to early August.  Details of the works and potential impacts (eg lane closures and speed limits) can be downloaded here.

The end results will be two lanes in each direction along Cook Street and changed lane structure (I guess to help long trucks) for the turns onto and off the West Gate Bridge from/to Todd Road. Very detailed diagrams of the final layouts can be downloaded as follows:

Webb Dock Works Update

As many of you will have seen, works continue on the traffic signals and landscaping across Williamstown and Todd roads, as well as the over-dimensional gate and commuter bike path north of Williamstown Road.

We have been informed that a final closure of Todd Road between the West Gate Freeway southern ramp and north of the Life Saving driveway is scheduled for early June. More details to be provided in the coming weeks.

We have also been advised that the Webb Dock Access Improvement Project to duplicate Cook Street and improve the West Gate Freeway entry/exit ramps will start this week.  We are seeking more information and will pass this on when we receive it.

Closure of Todd Road - 2-7 March

The Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) have advised that as part of the Webb Dock upgrade project, works to reconfigure and close Williamstown Road west of Todd Road are scheduled for 2-7 March. This will involve evening works and a full closure of Todd Road between the West Gate Freeway southern ramp to south of Williamstown Road from 7pm Friday 4th March to 5am Monday 7th March.

From 7pm Friday 4th March, Williamstown Road will be closed west of Todd Road and port traffic will access the port via the new internal port road, Webb Dock Drive. Noise mitigation measures are in place to minimise construction impacts. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Webb Dock Update

The Port of Melbourne Corporation has produced a useful poster outlining the piling activity timeline and information associated with the current works at Webb Dock.  It contains graphics of where work has been completed and where work is still to be done.

The Port of Melbourne have just provided some more details about a new interactive Playscape in the Perce White Reserve, some comments on use of Maritime Cove and Webb Trail this summer, and a further update on what is happening with the Webb Dock roads.

Landscaping of Riverbank South of the Westgate Bridge

The Port of Melbourne Corporation in their latest Webb Dock update (downloadable here) have highlighted this interesting information.

The Friends of Westgate Park have started work landscaping a new area of the riverbank south of the Westgate Bridge which has just been opened up for public access. The work will also include a new west > east bike path linking the Punt to Todd Road’s new pathways. The Group celebrates its 30th  
Anniversary next month which has seen the barren wasteland transformed into one of Melbourne’s most important ecological and recreational reserves.

Todd Road Closure this Weekend

This is just a reminder that Todd Road will be closed from 6pm this Friday night (6/11) until 5am Monday morning.  Due to this closure expect more trucks on Williamstown Road and some delays at the Williamstown Road / Todd Road intersection.

Port Open Day Boat Tours 

These are set to return for a limited summer season commencing in November, so don’t miss out on your chance for a behind the scenes look at the Port of Melbourne.  Departing from Williamstown in the morning and Docklands in the afternoon, Port Open Day tours are free, family friendly events, and the best way to see Australia’s busiest container port like never before.

The first tour day for the summer is Sunday, 29 November (bookings open 9 am on Monday 9 November), with more tours scheduled for February and April 2016.

Cruise Ships for the Cup

While Flemington gears up for a busy Melbourne Cup Carnival, final preparations are also underway at Station Pier for a huge weekend of cruise shipping.  It all kicks off on 2 November with the arrival of the Carnival Spirit, followed by three thoroughbreds from the P&O stable; Pacific Pearl, Pacific Jewel, and Pacific Dawn.  So it's going to busy around Station Pier next week.
